“Cards against humanity” is the brainchild of eight alumni students of Highland Park High School during New Year’s Celebration. Ideologies of games like Balderdash, Magic: The Gathering and Charades were the basic building blocks that bred this game to life. Furthermore, the successful campaign of the website, Kickstarter nurtured the game and, inspired the creators to give further creativity to their innovation and give new products.
The success story:
Initially, the game started with only black ‘question’ cards and the others were free to write answers of their own but as the game gained popularity, the answers began to come in preprinted white cards and online options were also made available by the concerned website. After its official release in May 2011, within one month, it held first rank in several online sites. Its popularity and sales increased gradually every year. Later that year, the game announced its first expansion in a games festival that included 12 blank cards and 100 new cards that was sold within three days. With increasing popularity, Cards against humanity published new sets of cards with expansions and additions at regular intervals which has always stayed popular and bestseller game both online and offline. Till the year 2014, it was made available in Britain, North America and Australia only but, later it gained popularity worldwide. Now it is one of the most popular in the world.
Beyond games:
Cards against humanity founders have also associated the game with charity. The creators released a special pack in December 2012 named special holiday pack where they gave users the privilege to decide the rate of the cards. The users had paid $3.89 on an average resulting in huge turnover that was entirely donated to several foundations.
Another charity done by Cards against humanity was in December 2013, where they promoted a new pack named “12 Days of Holiday Bullshit”. The idea was to distribute 12 random gifts in 12 days and take $12 in return from people. On tenth day of the campaign, they donated $1 to every person that contributed. The total amount collected was donated for various educational projects.
