Gone are the days when we had to painstakingly connect end number of wires to configure a small system. The world has changed and the globe has become a local village. With the constant technological innovations, the electronics are becoming compact and user-friendly. The concept of wireless connectivity is becoming popular day by day. From speakers to internet connections, everything has become wireless, including wireless microphone systems.
Concept of Wireless Microphone
Wireless microphone systems are simply microphones without the presence of physical cables connecting it to a sound system. The system itself is very compact and consists of a small transmitter which is powered by a small battery. It is also called a radio microphone. The advantage of using Wireless microphone systems are the elimination of wires which makes the system efficient and environment-friendly. Wireless microphones are widely being used in the entertainment industry, television broadcasting and public speaking among others. The transmission of audio is done with the help of radio waves using UHF, VHF frequencies or AM, FM. The low-cost alternative to transmission is the use of infrared light. However infrared has limitations in the form of the lower range of connectivity where the other forms have a longer range.
History
After radio microphones, let’s look at the history and the evolution of wireless microphone systems. The concept became popular during 1945 when various magazines like Popular Science and Popular Mechanics made the offer of making wireless microphones transmit voice to nearby radios. However, the concept was first put into shape by Royal Air Force Flight Engineer and Figure Skater, Reg Moores in 1947. He used the creation in Tom Arnold’s production ‘Aladdin on Ice’ at Brighton’s sports stadium during Christmas in the year 1949. He later on donated his prototype to the Science Museum in London in 1972. Later on, several other people based their research on his prototype and developed more wireless microphones that were more technically advanced and user-friendly. Today, wireless microphones have become a reality and are being commercially produced for a wide array of applications. Also it is gaining a huge popularity as well.
